Colored Contacts 101
Diameters
- Circle lenses, first introduced around 2005, typically have a diameter of 14.0mm. For beginners, it's recommended to start with lenses of 14.0mm or 14.2mm in diameter. 14.0mm diameter offers enough enlargement for most, being subtle enough that people won't notice you're wearing cosmetic enhancement lenses unless they're very close.
- Contact Lenses with a 14.5mm diameter create a more noticeable "dolly" effect, making it clear that you're wearing cosmetic lenses. For an even more dramatic look, contact lenses of 14.8mm and above give a very large-eyed, anime-like appearance. These are ideal for special events or costumes, as it will be obvious that you're wearing cosmetic lenses.
- In a similar fashion, colored contacts, first released around the same time, follow a similar sizing guide. Starting with sizes of 14.0mm or 14.2mm is good for beginners. At 14.0mm, the enlargement is modest, and others won't realize you're wearing them unless they're very close. 4.5mm diameter gives a more pronounced look, and sizes over 14.8mm create a distinctive, large-eyed effect, suitable for special occasions or costumes.
Water Content
Contact lenses with a high water content are generally perceived as more comfortable and can be worn for longer durations. However, they have a greater tendency to cause dryness. On the other hand, contact lenses with a lower water content are less likely to dehydrate while on the eye compared to those with a higher water content.
